Last year was the hottest on record, oceans boiled, glaciers melted at alarming rates, and it left scientists scrambling to understand exactly why.
Now a new study published Thursday in the journal Science says it has identified the missing part of the puzzle: clouds.
To be more specific, the rapid surge in warming was supercharged by a dearth of low-lying clouds over the oceans, according to the research findings which may have alarming implications for future warming.
In simple terms, fewer bright, low clouds mean the planet has darkened, allowing it to absorb more sunlight, said Helge Goessling, a report author and climate physicist at the Alfred Wegener Institute in Germany.

Comment: The report indicates that the "darkening of the surface" started in the 1970's. Is that when concrete stopped being used and was replaced by asphalt?

We're in a positive feedback loop now, god help us.

(148,004 posts)It's difficult to find information on how much of our road surface is concrete and how much is asphalt. However, when the interstate highway system was built, starting in the 1950s, concrete was used more than asphalt due to its longer lifespan.
Both are still in use in roadbuilding. But concrete did not "stop being used" in the 1970s. Not at all. They're still pouring reinforced concrete highways just about everywhere.

(16,660 posts)used. When I grew up everything was concrete and light covered except the roofs of buildings and homes. Now all the streets are all asphalt but the roofs have gone white to cut down on the heat. As kids we played in the streets barefoot. Now it would roast your feet on the black surface.
No science involved as my last science class was in the dark ages in the 60's. Just a crazy observation.
I just remembered that some city were trying to get buildings to put on the white roofing instead of just the black tar to prevent the heat islands.

(17,725 posts)that talked about this. It discussed the change in pan evaporation rates which is a tool farmers use for calculating water needs for crops and livestock. The rates have been tracked for over 50 years so there is solid, long-term data. Anyway, the documentary is definitely worth watching.
