As youve likely seen things kind of went off the rails today on Capitol Hill. Speaker Mike Johnson had assembled one of those big spending packages to avoid a government shutdown. Then Elon Musk went off on the bill and started a stampede for the exits among House Republicans. Then Trump turned against it too. Then JD Vance. By the end of the day not only was it clear that the bill was dead. There was a real question about whether Johnsons Speakership will survive the vote for Speaker coming up on January 3rd.
But none of those points are the critical ones. This is about Elon Musk.
Trump has brought Musk into the central circle of power. Hes not only de facto Vice President. When was the last time you saw JD Vance? Hes practically co-president. Musk is erratic, volatile, impulsive, mercurial. He introduces a huge source of unpredictability and chaos into the presidency that for once Trump doesnt control. See it clearly: Musk did this. Trump thrives on chaos, but his chaos. Not someone elses chaos.
Trump is following. Hes trying to pretend otherwise but hes following. And unlike all of Trumps other bad hires or hires he gets tired of he cant just shitcan Musk like all the rest. Musk is worth hundreds of billions of dollars. Hes got a bigger megaphone. And hes got his own brand. Im pretty sure there will eventually be a really big and really ugly falling out between the two of them. But it will take a while to get there and the costs are potentially quite large for both of them.

(15,053 posts)You see how he snivels and gets punked by Putin and Kim Jong Un.
He is servile to those who he is submissive to.

(4,238 posts)Trump will not allow Elon to upstage him. Elon has never worked well with others. The best jd can hope for, is that they both will burn each other down, like two sypernovas colliding.

(2,254 posts)Right now Trump has no powers whatsoever, other than his bully pulpit. He is thriving on chaos alone and Musk brings that in huge doses. Trump wants Bidens presidency to end in chaos thinking he pin the blame on him. Once Trump has his Presidental powers, I think the first thing he will do is bring Musk down several pegs (he has to at this point). And the fun will begin. Musks wealth is addicted to massive Govt. contracts/subsidies and Trump could crush that or reward that on a whim. When the autrocrat makes his example of the oligarchs to bring the others in line, he starts with the head oligarch. And definitely the one most willing to challenge his authority and think he can get away with it.

(7,603 posts)Whats it gonna be like?
Musk's power is money and the noise he can make on X, and lately the hold on the shorthairs of GOP members of Congress (his threat is primaries and it seems effective)
Trump's power is what? POTUS and not really much else? (asking I dunno). I reckon he could threaten to deport Muskrat. The richest man in the world thing has got to get under his skin and revenge/retribution is one of his calling cards
I think Musk wins and now its him and Putin that control our government and DT. Musk doesnt have to publicly call out DT, he's the boss now
ETA::: oooh another poster has pointed out Trump got elected and dodged jail which is all he wanted. Musk has free reign

(7,271 posts)The recent movie portrays Frump learning from Roy Cohn how to be a mob boss, how to hit first, never admit defeat, and other bully behaviors. In the end, the student betrays the teacher.
When will Muskrat betray Frump?
My question for the next four years is, Who is President?
