An unfortunate chain of events...
The Precondition: There are always, and always have been, moving, flashing, colored lights in the night sky. Especially on the East Coast around airports. But, that's just the way it is, and generally nobody pays any attention. Until...
The Trigger: Someone decides something strange is going on, and it breaks through the news barrier. One report leads to another, and now, instead of not paying attention, lots of people start paying attention. And they start seeing what was always there, but which they had not really noticed: Moving, flashing, colored lights in the night sky!!!!
The Interpretation: When someone starts to notice something they haven't really paid attention to before, the phenomenon requires interpretation. It could have been interpreted simply as an airplane. Or, given a nudge, a drone. Or, maybe a UFO!!! But interpreting it as a boring old airplane is just... boring. A drone or a UFO is exciting! Its something to talk about! People pay attention to you! So, there is a reward factor for the less boring and pedestrian interpretation. But...
Social Acceptance: It takes a "special" sort of person to go full UFO. And being that person is a bit uncomfortable. People might think you are a bit weird. However - Drones are not weird. We all know and experience them - they are real. So interpreting the lights in the sky as a drone gets you the reward within acceptable social boundaries. Its strange, exciting, fun... but not full wacko UFO.
So, Let the Good Times Roll!!!

(75,778 posts)I will respectfully disagree ...... I think the safest thing we all can do at this point is to go as far beyong anxiety and panic as possible. We seem to do best as a nation when filled with superstition, delusions, and with an increased level of violence. Maybe the incoming president will tell us what country Saudi Arabia wants us to bomb. Or ask Putin for help.

(3,069 posts)This is not like stuff before. These are drones in groups, and not something that's been around.
And no, I don't think they're aliens.

(6,157 posts).... I live very close to a major east coast airport. At night, and even during the day, an airplane moving at a distance towards or away from the observer appears to hover in one place. If it is moving at a slight angle, it appears to move slowly horizontally. At night, with just some lights as reference, depth perception is not reliable.
The "good" thing about aliens is that, being otherworldly, they can do strange things for no reason at all. But for drones, human agents are involved. They have to have a reason or a motive to do something out of the ordinary.
I can't really think of a reason for anyone to fly dozens of car sized drones around aimlessly in multiple locations up and down the east coast every night for weeks or months on end. What's your idea why someone would do this?

(3,069 posts)They absolutely were hovering.
We lived close to an airport too & it's eerie to see, until you get used to it. The other thing people don't think about is how light reflects off so many surfaces & seems to bounce around. We had a weird light in our bedroom & figured out the sun was hitting a car down the street & it reflected onto the back of a metal street sign & into our window.

(36,229 posts)Maybe just field or farm, maybe a factory. A mile or so south of the freeway.
They looked like a school of fish--reflective and moving in synchrony, doing aerobatics. Now moving as a block, now streaming in unison or splitting in multiple streams before reuniting.
Very distracting to any driver that noticed them. But nothing suspicious. Just curious.

(6,157 posts).... if they are car sized drones, why would anyone be flying dozens of them around at night, aimlessly, in multiple locations up and down the east coast? Every night for weeks, maybe a few months on end?
It sounds rediculess to me. There isn't any point to it.

(3,069 posts)Are they a new species of bird. And I am sure in hell not a UFO person.

(6,157 posts).... I can only go by what I have seen myself, seen in videos and pictures, and my common sense.
It doesn't seem reasonable that some one or some organization would be flying car sized drones, a dozen of them at a time, up and down the East coast, in multiple locations, every night for weeks, maybe months on end. What would be the purpose of this?
Doing so would cost a whole lot lot of money, it would take hundreds of people, and it would involve a lot of obvious ground based infrastructure. If it were even possible to keep such an endeavor secret, what would you get out of it? Some sensationalistic news stories? It doesn't make any sense at all.

I really should have gotten myself a Chinese drone source, and started selling them on Truth Social...

(9,409 posts)Why didnt you tell us! It sounds like there are tons of 6 foot apparatuses flying around in NJ! They have to cost big bucks! I havent seen any drones near any of the airports Ive been to in the last few months. Ive stayed at hotels next to OHare and the Atlanta airport and never saw or heard any. Im not sure about there being any UFOs but I wouldnt make any large bets against it (maybe a small bet). Glad I havent flown into NY or NJ lately. I was on a plane that flew into some geese and that almost crashed us! The only drone Ive seen lately was my neighbors little drone that they flew over us girls at the pool.

(14,194 posts)When the USSR was dissolved in late 1991, there was a sudden surge in "UFO sightings" there. The same in the US in the 50's coinciding with the "red scare." It seems to be something that happens throughout history when there's a big shift in geopolitics or society in general.
In this case, maybe it has something to do with the election, since it seems to have started shortly after that.

(36,229 posts)And a bit of paranoia mixed in with valid concerns.
It helps for the left to think that Russia's somehow involved. Or incels. Or some other enemy group that stands in the way of rightness and good.
And for the right, to think that maybe Russia or more likely China is involved. Helps that recently a Chinese national was stopped leaving with a bunch of secrets (whether industrial, governmental/political or governmental/research, I forget). Or that drones could be fitted for electronic eavesdropping, a la Ukraine.
The most intriguingly undoubtedly wrong suspicion is that there's some secret (meaning 'we don't know about it') intel about radiologic materials being assembled in New Jersey and it's Homeland Security using radiation detectors to find it to stop the "next" Islamic/Russian/Iranian (pick your enemy du jour) mass attack.
Or maybe it's just that drones are cheaper and more advanced than ever and a lot of people want easily accessible fairly open spaces without apts. and backyards to fly over, and in some places that means US installations of some sort.

(18,203 posts)The drone story has really drawn a line under that. Most sightings are quite obviously airplanes. I doubt you could find many people walking down the street who could articulate the difference.
The drone story appears to be bringing the country together through stupidity and ignorance.
