AlterNet - 'Allow some of this to be privatized': GOP gov admits goal of DOGE is to gut Social Security

Carl Gibson December 14, 2024

New Hampshire Republican Governor Chris Sununu is bullish on a billionaire-led effort to cut social safety nets for working-class Americans — including the political third rail of Social Security.

Semafor reporter David Weigel recently interviewed Sununu, who is retiring after his successor, Republican Governor-elect Kelly Ayotte, assumes office on January 8. The Granite State governor expressed optimism about billionaire Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk's "Department of Government Efficiency," or "DOGE," (which is not yet an actual federal agency authorized by Congress) which he is co-leading with billionaire pharmaceutical investor Vivek Ramaswamy.

While Musk and Ramaswamy's advisory panel is expected to recommend the elimination of various labor and environmental regulations and the firing of thousands of public sector workers, Sununu is particularly hoping they will pursue cuts to both Medicare and Social Security. Sununu compared Musk and Ramaswamy's efforts to former President George W. Bush's failed proposal to privatize Social Security in 2005.

"George W. Bush was absolutely right, and he’s been proven right time and time again," Sununu said. "You have to move that retirement age. That’s just so obvious... Whether it’s 62 or 64 or 65, find the right number that works. Do it for the next generation. Allow some of this to be privatized. Those models have proven to be absolutely rock solid, and work."

"George W. Bush was a couple of senators away from getting this done," he added. "So many of America’s problems would be cured."

Breaking the social compact known as Social Security and Medicare would doom them in '26. Are they that stupid?

They took away Roe without many consequences.

Somehow they will believe that Trump did a good thing by cutting their benefits.

Remember that the evil old bastard raygun delayed the start of raising the retirement age for 25 years after he signed it into law.

Voters in this country, I dunno. Actually, I do--too many enable these predators by being stupid and uninformed.

I hope voters revolt over matters like this in mid-terms, but not sure it will happen.

an incredibly stupid MFer!! For those that don't remember, Shrub tried hard to push this as the opening salvo to his 2nd term. He did all kinds of town halls, and the public told him go pound sand in droves! It really was the start of the downward spiral of his Presidency, culminating with the financial crisis in 2008.

"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas.4 Their number is negligible and they are stupid."

The current crop are likewise negligible in number, and likewise stupd, but thanks to their accumulated billions and their insidious manipulation of social media (with Russian help), they are having an impact that John Birchers like Hunt could only have dreamed about. We need to rein in PACs and SuperPACs NOW. We need campaign finance reform NOW -- although ten years ago would have been SO much better.

Anything except Department. Only Congress can create a department. Accepting the name gives it a legitimacy it does not have in law.

George Lakoff and the folks at the Frame Lab discussed it in a recent video.

Challenge the casual use of the term by journalists, the media, everyone.

Timothy Snyder points out the Orwellian use of language always occurs with the rise of fascism. Denying that is part of resisting.

Assad's were to Syria. Except there are 3 generations of Sunun's. And the two families share the same views on the obligations to the people. We all paid all of our lives into trust funds so the money would be available for our retirement. Now these jerks want to steal it to line their own pockets. Surely Sununu realizes that the retirement age has over the last 15 years gone from 65 to 67 and any retirement before that age has a penalty assessed that decreases the benefit so it pays for itself. The only issue that needs to be addressed is the cap, which does not get adjusted for inflation. Raising or removing the cap would more than shore up the program. Like Trump, Sununu employs the big lie.

the reason for a potential shortfall in the future is because income increases have gone disproportionately to the wealthy in recent decades, thence underfunding Social Security relative to the revenue that would have gone into the program if income gains were distributed as in the past.

They will cut off their noses to spite their faces.
All the GOP has to do is give them some other BS to focus on.
