Maybe that was unscripted. Russia is so stretched they couldn't defend a close ally against lightly armed guys driving around in pickup trucks. Lost a naval base they've enjoyed since the Cold War. Now Putin is trying to play nice with the new Syrian landlords. I doubt they'll have much of it. Bombing the shit out of people at Assad's request for a decade tends to turn them off.
