Come on people. Quit with the nonsense excuses for these drones flying over the eastern seaboard. Let's knock out the various possibilities one by one...
First, these drones clearly don't belong to a foreign government - or they would have been shot out of the sky by now. With an annual defense budget approaching one trillion dollars per year, we're more than capable of doing so - just as we did with China's "weather balloons."
Second, they aren't aliens. Period. End stop. It's insane to hear otherwise intelligent people willing to accept bat shit crazy conspiracy theories involving UFOs. From Republicans, I absolutely expect crazy. From people in my own party, I except better.
That leaves our third and final possibility - the drones belong to some branch of our own government or military and are being utilized for some purpose the government is not yet willing to divulge. It wouldn't be the first time the government has tested or utilized aircraft over domestic airspace without even acknowledging the existence of said aircraft (The F-117 Nighthawk was flying over the Southwestern U.S. for years prior to the government giving the public details about its stealth aircraft program). This is the most plausible argument for what folks are seeing in the sky. Is it worth asking questions regarding the purpose of these aircraft? Absolutely - even if answers aren't likely to be forthcoming. Is it worth going down some rabbit hole of conspiracy theories, UFOs, little green men from Mars and such nonsense? No, not at all.

(19,529 posts)This is the latest mania humans are notorious for. One person somewhere sees what they think looks strange and for whatever reason, or no reason at all, other people suddenly notice something that's been there all the time, reading far more into it than actually exists. Drones of all sizes and shapes are ubiquitous. Have been for some time now. Hell, you can even build your own.
As usual with some new technology, humans are pushing the limits of how far, how big and where they can fly them. Add the fact that humans are legendary for imitating sheep and renowned for group think and .....voila! The latest oh, shiny! UFO's in the 70's and on and off since. That whole satanic panic thingy, made up from whole cloth in the 80's and 90's. Should I go on? I despair for my species.

(19,529 posts)They're most certainly NOT flying from some Iranian "drone carrier" off the east coast. They're not extraterrestrial. It's not some humongous government plot. Odds are, they're far more mundane. Probably a mix of civilian, commercial, government and maybe some military drones doing what drones do. Fly around and look "funny" to unsuspecting humans. But nothing to get our panties all in a wad about. Certainly nothing state governors need to be all in a huff about. We've probably discovered the obvious that's been flying around for several years now. One person thinks they look..."strange"...add social media, a big dose of human nature and off goes the mania!

(27,400 posts)Lakehurst, besides being famous for where the Hindenburg exploded in 1937, is now home to the Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC) Aircraft Division, Lakehurst. There's a lot of aerial testing that takes place out of the facility. This could be a classified project that the military can't own up to because of security.
This is just my guess.

(5,173 posts)are imaginary or don't exist. It is much more a case of people seeing things and drawing the wrong conclusions (call it mass hysteria if you will, I would think it is more mass delusion).

(27,400 posts)What confused me was, did he mean they weren't drones people were reporting seeing but traditional aircraft?
Sorry for the confusion.

(27,400 posts)There's a huge military installation in the middle of NJ called Joint Base McGuire - Dix - Lakehurst. The Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC) Aircraft Division, Lakehurst is located there. They do a lot of testing out of NAWC.
Could this be testing the military cannot openly disclose due to it being classified?
Just a guess...

(178 posts)With the chance of being shot at by freaked-out individuals and falling, or just malfunctioning and falling ? What happens if they kill people in the event of that? What happens if that tech is retrieved by non-government people?
Why would the military test drones to chase an unawares coast guard ship? Isn't that risking them being shot down?

Maybe the beginnings of the autonomous HK drone as featured in The Terminator.
